Two volumes re operations at the Charleston Marine School, which operated onboard a ship, 1859-1865 in Charleston, S.C. Journal, 11 June 1861-16 May 1862, kept by B.E. Bedault while a mate aboard the Marine School Ship "Lodebar," Charleston, S.C., with brief entries re weather, ship repairs, and student activities, and also providing names of entering students, as well as those deserting, and being discharged. Also including unbound newspaper clippings, 1850-1866 and undated, removed from Bedault's journal, including obituaries and tributes of respect, articles re the Marine School Ship "Lodebar," the Marine Washington Total Abstinence Society, the Seaman's Friend Society, the ministry of the Rev. William Black Yates to the mariners of Charleston, S.C., and the sinking of the mail steamer "Evening Star." Also including a copy of a published letter, 28 Feb. 1850, from John C. Calhoun to A.J.B., in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County, New York, who was enrolled at State and National Law School [in operation, 1849-1853, located in the former Sans Souci hotel building while under ownership of John W. Fowler].
